Q&A with Brueggemann #3: Psychotherapy

Published by Josh on

QAEric B asked:

“You’ve been outspoken about the importance of your own therapy. Do you see psychotherapy to be a spiritual practice? How do you understand it within the context of Scripture?”

Brueggemann’s response:

“I think it can be a spiritual practice, depending on how it is done. I think the interface between psychotherapy and what goes on in the Psalms is of immense interest and importance. I think, as Gerstenberger has shown, that what goes on as rehabilitation in the Psalms is a close parallel to effective psychotherapy.”
